St James' Graveyard

At the August 2009 meeting of the Wardle Society, concerns were raised regarding the overgrown and neglected condition of the graveyard.

It seems that St John's Church graveyard in Smallbridge, is in a very similar condition  - See here

It was decided that the Society would write a letter of complaint to the Church Diocese, this was done, and a copy may be seen here - Letter

The replies to this letter can be seen here:            Reply 1            Reply 2            Reply 3

The replies were discussed at the Wardle Society September 2009 meeting, please read the minutes of the meeting.

In response to a reader's letter, a letter of reply was sent from Wardle Society to the Rochdale Observer in September 2009 - See here

Update - December 2009

Following a meeting between Cllr. Ashley Dearnley and the Rev A Howells, the Youth Offending Team will be doing the work, however this is still in the pipeline.

Update - May 2010

No start has been made on the project as of yet.

Update - July 2010

Steve visited the Youth Offending Team who had now commenced working on maintaining the church grounds on the 1st Saturday of each ‘summer time’ month, between the hours of 10am and 2pm.

Although the 10 or so young people were working hard when he visited, it was very clear that this would not be enough to adequately maintain either the front of the church or the graveyard to the rear.

Update - August 2010

Cllr. Ashley Dearnley reported that he had been in contact via the Probation Service with the Community Payback Team. They have committed themselves to tackle the overgrown graveyard and as opposed to the Youth Offending Team, because they are adults, they can use appropriate power tools.

Update - September 2010

Ted and Steve reported to the September meeting that thanks to the Probation Service’s Community Payback Team, the rear grave yard was looking much, much better (see picture below) It was hoped that the few remaining ‘black spots’ and the front graveyard would be done during their next monthly visit.

Update - October 2010

The whole of the Graveyard (front and back) has now been cleared of all the overgrown weeds etc. by the Probation Service’s 'Community Payback Team'

We are led to believe that Cllr. Dearnley is currently negotiating with the same group for their continued long term maintenance of the graveyard.

Update - March 2011

Cllr. Ashley Dearnley has contacted the Probation Service's Community Payback Team, and they have put forward a program that would see them maintaining the Graveyard x4 times this year.
